We inherit a house, a nose, recipes, a name, debts, flaws, traumas, a language and a reality. Inheritance has blurred contours; it interferes with identity, sometimes in a very tangible way, and sometimes quite subtly, unconsciously. Our differences remind us of the history that precedes us, and we find ourselves questioning what makes us who we are, what has been passed down to us. Through the addition of generational experiences, heritage becomes the scaffolding of progress. But heritage is not just retroactive, since it derives above all from the relationship we cultivate with it. Inheritance is constantly being rewritten, with each individual having an influence on social continuity and on the heritage he or she in turn leaves behind.

In this way, heritage is both past and future, tradition and innovation, stability and change, innate and acquired, societal and individual, bequeathed and received.

Let's draw on our artistic, ideological, technological and personal heritages to honor the richness of our legacies and add our own.
